The shaking heavily damaged communities throughout the San Fernando Valley and Simi Valley, and their surrounding mountains north and west of Los Angeles, causing estimated losses of 20 billion dollars. Fifty-seven people died, more than 9,000 were injured, and more than 20,000 were displaced from their homes by the effects of the quake. 4. 3/1/1997 Yassar Arafat, head of the Palestine Liberation Organization, toured America. He was in the US for one month, leaving the first part of April. On the day he landed in the U.S., powerful tornadoes devastated huge sections of Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi and the Dakotas. These storms led to the worst flooding in the 20th century. On the day he left, the storms ceased. WASHINGTON (CNN) -Arafat arrives in Washington.
