A Lesson from Our Father

Neil Daws - 12/16/2010

A week or so ago, my son came down with a bad cold and this was quickly passed on to my wife.

Since coming to UBM and beginning to study God's Word, these 'colds' have never been able to get a hold on me. Even when my wife has had influenza, there was no effect on me whatsoever. Praise the Lord.

Needless to say, whenever these 'colds' have appeared, I have spoken as a witness to God's power in keeping me free from these attacks.

So, last week I again mentioned the Lord's power to keep me safe - and if only they would believe, they would receive the same benefits. I think this is where the lesson begins; it seems that instead of being "weak to the weak", I was becoming dogmatic and self-righteous with an 'I'm alright, Jack' attitude.

My son just outright does not believe in God; he is a product of the modern education system with its emphasis on 'all faiths' and consequently none. Anyway, I simply dealt with him by deciding to give him a hot drink: hot water, orange juice and honey - with the admonition, "Drink this; it will sort you out". Surprisingly, when I came along with the next hot drink, he grabbed for it as much as to say, "This stuff really works". And from then on he made a pretty quick recovery.

As my wife succumbed to the cold, I spoke to her, as usual, about the power of faith - all the time thinking, 'I'm OK; it won't affect me'; but I was self-righteous again. The 'drink' episode with my son had not yet registered and I didn't even bother to make one for my wife (she was making her own and taking tablets to relieve the symptoms).

Imagine my surprise then when I too got the 'cold'. My first reaction was, 'What? This can't be. I don't get colds'. But, yes, I did. I got the cold and suffered the same symptoms as my wife.

I think there is a lesson here about self-righteousness and helping others -- about being 'weak to the weak'.

Next time the 'colds' come around, I won't just sit back and preach - I will do. I will help. I will get active and offer the hot drink (in faith). And I won't get the cold. Praise the Lord. Thank you for teaching me a valuable lesson. In Jesus' name. Amen.
